5 Reasons to Quit Social Media.

It is scary when, during a meeting or a social event, if there is just an ounce of silence, some of us creep our hands into our pockets and brings out a flat rectangular device. Instead of interacting with others, we open our social media to, hopefully, entertain ourselves until something is happening. But do you know that there are more, stronger, reasons why you should stop using social media? These are 5 reasons to quit social media.

Reason #1 Social Media makes you dumb

The science behind social media developers is to make you do one thing- consume. The more you consume, the more the developers of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc succeed. Remember this, because this will be the most important point. They have social media engineers which they pay to know how they can make you consume. They know consumer behavior. They use these data to manipulate users. That is why you find yourself very hard to stop scrolling down that rectangular piece of device.

When you are only consuming and doing nothing producing, you’re not thinking. You’re not exerting any mental energy. You’re not actively moving. You’re passively consuming. This is because consuming is easy and does not require you to think. Producing, on the other hand, is hard. You have to think.

When you’re not thinking, you are not training your brain. By time, your brain will forget how to think, and automatically you will find it much harder to think about simpler things. This is due to the fact that the brain is like a muscle. It needs to be trained. Without training, it will rot.

Reason #2: You’re missing out on the important questions in life.

This is one of the most important reasons that other blogs/websites don’t tell you about why you should quit social media.

“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], “Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”

Quran, 3:190-191

When you’re only consuming, when will you have the time to think about the Earth, the skies, nature? How is that by consuming social media, we will remember God? When will you have the time to think about the important questions like whether God exists?

What is the purpose of life? What is the right way of life? Where are you going to be 30 years from now?

Why is nature so beneficient? What are the ‘signs’ that God is talking about in the verse above? And in fact, why are we created to be bored without social media?

It scares me when people only talk about the trivial things in life while forgetting about these big questions.

Reason #3: You are losing control over your life

Social media is designed to make you keep on scrolling down. Without realizing, 10 minutes have passed. You think it is just a short time. Then, 30 minutes have passed. An hour passed, you finally realized that you have to get up doing some work. You missed some of the chores and the work due. But then, after just 30 minutes of doing work, a message came in, or you remembered something interesting that you just had to check it out on your phone. Again, you find yourself scrolling through that flat rectangular device for another hour.

You wasted a lot of time, and you start to lose your self-esteem. All the feelings of guilt and laziness cloud your mind which finally, you made the decision to just scroll that piece of phone the whole day.

Reason #4: You’re hardly learning anything valuable

If you are using social media, chances are you are following your friends, colleagues, a handful of celebrities, and a meme account. That itself shows there’s nothing valuable to learn from them.

But even if you do follow some gurus/ educational accounts, you’re not really learning. Learning is a hard mental process where you have to give thought about the things you learnt, write down what you learn, or discuss it with others. Without it, you will just forget what you learn the next day.

Reason #5: Artificial communication, and poor real communication

People use the ‘laughing with tears’ emoticon although they’re not even laughing. They use highly filtered avatars of themselves. It’s a sign of how fake social media is. One study found out that 74% of millennials prefer texting rather than face-to-face communication. Actually we communicate more meaningfully when interacting in person.

There are more reasons to stop using social media that it feels unfair for me to stop here.

What you should do

It is impossible to quit using social media 100% because of how they are integrated into our lives today. Not only we use social media like Whatsapp to text important matters to others, but some of us operate our businesses through social media.

First thing is to recognize the demonic harm that social media can bring into your lives. If you’ve feel victimized by social media, your time stolen, and happiness taken away, the reasons should be stronger for you.

Next, is to make yourself busy. Don’t make yourself busy with other useless stuff, that would defeat the purpose to quit social media. As I said earlier, start to think about the important questions in life.

Start to plan your life, look ahead what you’re going to be and where you’re heading. Think of whether the direction you’ve been heading to for the last 10 years is the right direction. Wake up in the middle of the night to read Quran, while reflecting what has been missing in your life, what you should’ve done, and what you need to start doing.

If you can’t find the answers to these questions, look for them! Read books, listen to videos and lectures. With the online world, the whole library is at your hands! You can in fact, drop a comment below to start a discussion about these questions. We need to start talking about ideas, and less about people and events.

Great minds talk about ideas.

And most importantly, don’t stop reading the Quran. It contains everything you need.

…And We have sent down to you the Book as clarification for all things and as guidance and mercy and good tidings for the Muslims.

Quran 16:89

I am much concern about reason 1 which is for the brain health.

It is indeed. I don’t know if this is a right comparison but for me social media is same like masturbation. Both give you too much ‘fantasy’ that is not even exist. Both give you some common side effect such as difficult in concentrating, low self esteem, anxiety, and low interest of other benefical things.

The best way to avoid is by doing activities that will take your ‘addiction’ away. For me, doing outdoor activities is the best way because it works. And I feel like I want to start reading too. Mind sharing what type/genre of books that you always enjoy reading it?

Since you wrote about social media, can you write about antisocial topic too any soon? Because it seems correlated and an interesting topic to discuss . Anyway, I enjoy reading this so thanks!

    • Hi, Mil.
Glad to know you enjoyed. Thank you for the comment. You are right, social media gives us some type of fantasy that we will later feel very guilty about it.
For me, i personally love to read books about theology, philosophy, economics, politics. Most of the time i read articles rather than books. One of my favourite book is “Fall of capitalism and rise of islam” and you can see the review i wrote here http://asyhadu.com/fall-of-capitalism-rise-of-islam-book-review/
Yes, i can write about antisocial soon. Will be writing soon. Thank you
