Meet Eric

This post was originally published on December 5, 2016

The second last Sunday, I met a man named Eric. He lives in Cyprus but was born in Mauritius. He works in the same company as my mom. My mom introduced the whole family to him on that day, and I have to say that he is one of the most wonderful person I’ve ever met. We met again the last Thursday before he headed back home to Cyprus and I learnt few very important things from him.

We talked mostly about something what people hardly talk about- religion. When my mom asked him what religion is he following right now, he swiftly said “I’m nothing”. He however was born in a Christian family and his parents are devoted believers. He has read the Quran, the Bible (haven’t finished), and is about to read the Gita.

He is a searcher. He is continuously seeking for the truth. This person is not an atheist. He believes in the existence of God, but not sure yet of which is the right religion. What amazes him about nature is that in it contains what is known as the Fibonacci sequence, or also known as the golden ratio. It’s in the sunflowers, pine cones, ocean waves, starfishes, buds on trees, petals, nautilus shells, and even spirals of galaxies! He concluded that there must be a Creator behind all this.

Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. Quran, 3:190

What is mentally blocking him is his failure to find an answer of why humans are created with faults and then God becomes angry when humans make mistakes although they are designed that particular way. For instance, someone creates a software and puts a fault in it, let’s say it will make a mistake every 100 calculations. Then, he gets angry when the software makes a wrong calculation.

Although I myself had been searching for the truth, he inspired me to continue on searching no matter how hard it is. I realised that I have stopped searching and was afraid to do so because I thought I’ve already found the truth. My father told him that if he keeps on searching, hopefully God will give him guidance. And all his efforts to find God, God will not dismiss them.

I learnt that we shouldn’t quit searching, because when we stop searching, although we are very convinced that we found the truth, our minds are closed and we’ll feel afraid to find out more about life, trapped in the ‘matrix’. We’ll never learn anything more from then. When we feel we are enough- that’s when we will fall.

No! [But] indeed, man transgresses. Because he sees himself self-sufficient. Quran, 96:6-7

If a butterfly is pulled out of its cocoon to soon, it will never be able to fly and will live the rest of its life crawling with a swollen body and shrivelled wings. The butterfly’s struggle to push its way through the tiny opening of the cocoon pushes the fluid out of its body and into its wings. Without the struggle, the butterfly would never fly.The butterfly is meant to struggle, so that it can achieve its full potential. Just like us, we struggle so that we can learn the truth. It’s the natural law. It exists in humans and very evidently in my field of expertise, civilizations.

The question now is that, do we want to struggle for a better reward, or choose instant gratification but suffer in the end? Struggle. Keep on searching.
